On this date in 1864 - Federal troops stole and destroyed over a half million dollars of private property as they occupied Clinton, Georgia.

- 1870 - Private James Anderson, Company M, Sixth Cavalry, earned the Medal of Honor on the Wichita River in Texas for his actions in the pursuit and subsequent fight with a group of hostiles.
- 1949 - Fourteen-year-old Jerry Lee Lewis made his first public, singing at the opening of a Ford dealership in his home town of Ferriday, Louisiana.
