On this date in 1813 - Members of the Hillabi Clan of the Muskogee Creeks offer to surrender to General Andrew Jackson. He agrees to the surrender, but other troops unaware of the agreement attack the unsuspecting Hillabee village. Five dozen Hillabis are killed, and 250 are captured. This attack enrages the Hillabis and they become the fiercest fighters of the Creek War.
Other Years:
- 1852 - Rose Philippine Duchesne died in St. Charles, Missouri. She would later be canonized as a saint on July 3, 1988 by Pope John Paul II.
- 1999 - Twelve were killed and 27 injured at Texas A&M University in College Station when a massive homecoming bonfire under construction collapsed.
