That Monster Tarleton Defeated

On this date in 1780 - Thomas Sumter's patriot troops defeated British Lt. Colonel Banastre Tarleton on the farm of William Blackstock on the hills above the Tyger River near Cross Anchor, South Carolina. 

Other Years:

  • 1819 - William E. Woodruff published the first issue of the Arkansas Gazette, the oldest continuously published newspaper west of the Mississippi River at Arkansas Post.
  • 1831 - While looking for the lost San Sabá silver mines, Jim Bowie, and ten companions, were attacked by 150 Caddo and Waco Indians. After failing at frontal attacks, the Indians set fire to the brush surrounding the Americans which also failed. The Indians left the field after losing more than fifty warriors, to Bowie's one.
  • 1861 - After federal troops occupied several cities neutral Kentucky passed its Ordinance of Secession and left the union.
  • 1913 - Grand Old Opry star, Louis Marshal "Grandpa" Jones was born in Niagara, Kentucky.
  • 1955 - Elvis Presley left Sun Records, after Sam Phillips sold his recording contract to RCA for only $35,000.
