On this date in 1968...

NBC aired a special program titled "Elvis" featuring performances by the artist dressed in black leather. The widely viewed television special renewed of Presley's stalled musical career.

  • 1780 - John Sevier, and volunteers from North Carolina, defeated the Chickamauga band of Cherokee at Boyd's Creek, Tennessee.
  • 1829 - In his first "State of the Union Address," President Andrew Jackson introduced his goal to remove all Indians in the southeastern part of the United States to lands west of the Mississippi. 
  • 1860 - A South Carolina delegation of U. S. House members warned U.S. President James Buchanan not to attempt reinforcement of Fort Sumter, because it would be an act of coercion and war.
  • 1863 - U.S. President Abraham Lincoln announced his plan for "Reconstruction."
  • 1879 - Louisiana citizens ratified their state constitution to officially re-enter the Union and end Reconstruction in the South.
  • 1984 - In Roanoke, Virginia, a jury found Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt innocent of libeling Reverend Jerry Falwell, but awarded Falwell $200,000 for emotional distress.
  • 1998 - Dallas, Texas-based AT&T Corp. announced that it was buying IBM's data networking business for $5 billion cash. 
  • 1999 - In Memphis, Tennessee a jury found that Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. had been the victim of a vast murder conspiracy, not a lone assassin.
