The Burr-Hamilton Duel

11 July 1804

On this date in 1804...

U.S. Vice-President Aaron Burr killed former Treasury SecretaryAlexander Hamilton in a duel over long- festering political differences. The duel would end Burr’s political career and start him on a shameful slide into treachery and dishonor.

Other Years:
  • 1863 - Federal troops attempted to assault Battery Wagner at Charleston, South Carolina. The attack was abandoned after the black 54th Massachusetts Regiment failed to breach the fort.
  • 1864 - Confederate General Jubal A. Early's troops attacked the fortifications of Washington, DC.
  • 1935 - The Southern Tenant Farmers Union formed in Tyronza, Arkansas to seek relief for sharecroppers and tenant farmers that New Deal agricultural policies neglected to address. The STFU was unlike most unions formed during the depression since it accepted members of all races.
