At Galveston, Texas Kirby-Smith surrendered remaining the Confederate troops of the Trans-Mississippi Department. General Joseph Shelby disregarded the order and led his Missouri Iron Brigade and all who would follow into exile in Mexico, sinking their battle flags in the Rio Grande River as they crossed.

- 1774 - The Quartering Act, one of the Intolerable Acts was enacted by England, allowing a governor in colonial America to house British soldiers in uninhabited houses, outhouses, barns, or other buildings if suitable quarters were not provided.
- 1788 - Forces under General John Sevier attacked and burned the Cherokee village of Hiwassee.
- 1924 - Congress passed the Indian Citizenship Act, finally granting U.S. citizenship to all Native Americans. (And making them subject to military conscription.)
- 1997 - In Denver, northern terrorist Timothy McVeigh was convicted on 15 counts of murder and conspiracy for his role in the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. He was executed four years later.
