On this date in 1809 - Meriwether Lewis died of multiple gunshot wounds on the Natchez Trace at Grinder’s Stand, Tennessee on rout to Washington. The death was ruled a suicide. However, modern forensic investigators have concluded Lewis was most likely assassinated by political rivals.
