On this date in 1864 - Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest's troops inflicted heavy damage to federal vessels and troops at Eastport, Mississippi on the Tennessee River.

1802 - The first non-Indian settlement was established in Oklahoma by the fur traders of Col. A.P. Chouteau at present-day Salinas.
1864 - Federal General W.T. Sherman's invading troops burned foundries, mills and shops of every kind in Rome, Georgia.
