On this date in 1862 – During the Maryland campaign a successful delaying action at the Battle of South Mountain (Boonesboro Gap) Maryland allowed General Robert E. Lee to reunite the divided Army of Northern Virginia before confronting the Federals at Sharpsburg three days later.
