On this date in 1864...

Federal troops stole and destroyed over a half million dollars of private property as they occupied Clinton, Georgia.

  • 1870 - Private James Anderson, Company M, Sixth Cavalry, earned the Medal of Honor on the Wichita River in Texas for his actions in the pursuit and subsequent fight with a group of hostiles.
  • 1949 - Fourteen-year-old Jerry Lee Lewis made his first public, singing at the opening of a Ford dealership in his home town of Ferriday, Louisiana.
  • 1979 - Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros signed a four-year contract for $4.5 million. At the time, Ryan was the highest paid player in major league baseball
  • 1984 - 20-year-old Dwight Gooden of Tampa, Florida playing for the New York Mets, became the youngest major-league pitcher to be named Rookie of the Year in the National League.
  • 1998 - The impeachment inquiry of U.S. President Bill Clinton began.
