Bomb Shelters for Dixie

6 October 1961 




On this date in 1961...

U.S. President John F. Kennedy advised Americans in the Southern U.S. to build bomb and  fallout shelters in response to the Soviet missle threat in Cuba.

Other Years:

  • 1841 - At the age of 37 and after several business failures author of the Texas Declaration of Independence George Childress committed suicide by stabbing himself.
  • 1948 - "Summer and Smoke" by Tennessee Williams opened on Broadway.
  • 1977 - Boxer George Foreman married Cynthia Lewis.
  • 1992 -  Texan Ross Perot appeared in his first paid broadcast on CBS-TV after entering the U.S. presidential race.
