Battle of South Mountain

14 September 1862 



On this date in 1862...

During the Maryland campaign a successful delaying action at the Battle of South Mountain (Boonesboro Gap) Maryland allowed General Robert E. Lee to reunite the divided Army of Northern Virginia before confronting the Federals at Sharpsburg three days later.

1807 - Former U.S. Vice President Aaron Burr was acquitted of a misdemeanor charge related to his plot to seize Louisiana Territory.
1814 – Continued British bombardment failed to reduce Ft. McHenry in the harbor at Baltimore, Maryland
1886 - George K Anderson of Memphis, Tennessee patented the first typewriter ribbon.
1915 - Carl G. Muench of Kentucky received a patent for Insulit, the first sound-absorbing material to be used in buildings. 
1972 - "The Waltons" premiered on CBS-TV.
1989 - Joseph T. Wesbecker shot and killed eight people and wounded twelve others at a printing plant in Louisville, Kentucky. 
1999 - Disney World closed down for the first time in its 28-year history due to Hurricane Floyd.
2015 - In Livingston, Louisiana the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors detected gravitational waves for the first time.
