On this date in 1864...
Confederate General John B. Hood evacuated Atlanta, Georgia, leaving the city helpless to resist federal arsonists.
Other Years:
- 1862 - Confederates defeated federals at the Battle of Chantilly, Virginia.
- 1864 – The second day of battle at Jonesboro, Georgia continued with about 3,000 casualties.
- 1893 - U.S. Marshals and the outlaws known as the Wild Bunch (AKA the Doolin gang) faced-off in what became known as the Battle of Ingalls, Oklahoma. Before the surviving gang members escaped three deputy marshals lay dead, along with one civilian dead and two wounded. Two gang members were wounded and Arkansas Tom Jones was captured.
- 1982 - J.R. Richard of Vienna, Louisiana returned to the Houston Astros after a two-year absence following a near-fatal stroke.
- 1998 - Mark McGwire of the St. Louis Cardinals hit his 56th and 57th homeruns to set a new National League record. He would eventually reach a total of 70 for the season on 27 September.
