On this date in 1863...
General Order No. 11 was issued by U.S. Brigadier General Thomas Ewing, commanding the District of the Border. He ordered the evacuation of four counties in western Missouri. Those who could establish their loyalty to the satisfaction of the commanding officer of the nearest military post would be issued certificates allowing them to move to military posts in the state. Everyone else was forced to leave the state.

- 1919 - Alabama governor and presidential candidate George Wallace was born in Clio, Alabama.
- 1921 - The first skirmishes of the Battle of Blair Mountain occur between striking coal miners and mining company security forces supported by federal troops in Logan County, West Virginia.
- 1997 - The tobacco industry agreed to an $11.3 billion settlement with the state of Florida.
