U.S. Vice-President Aaron Burr killed former Treasury SecretaryAlexander Hamilton in a duel over long- festering political differences. The duel would end Burr’s political career and start him on a shameful slide into treachery and dishonor.

- 1863 - Federal troops attempted to assault Battery Wagner at Charleston, South Carolina. The attack was abandoned after the black 54th Massachusetts Regiment failed to breach the fort.
- 1864 - Confederate General Jubal A. Early's troops attacked the fortifications of Washington, DC.
- 1935 - The Southern Tenant Farmers Union formed in Tyronza, Arkansas to seek relief for sharecroppers and tenant farmers that New Deal agricultural policies neglected to address. The STFU was unlike most unions formed during the depression since it accepted members of all races.
- 1977 - The Medal of Freedom was awarded posthumously to Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. at the White House.
- 1985 - Nolan Ryan of Refugio, Texas became the first major league pitcher to earn 4,000 strikeouts in a career while playing for the Houston Astros.
- 1987 - Bo Jackson of Bessemer, Alabama signed a five-year contract to play football for the L.A. Raiders while continuing to play baseball for the Kansas City Royals.
- 1998 - U.S. Air Force Lt. Michael Blassie was laid to rest near his Missouri home after his removal from the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington after his remains were positively identified.
