Ted Turner launched CNN, the world's first 24-hour television news network, signing on at 6 p.m. EST from its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.

- 2005 - The longest oil/natural gas explosion in the Houston, Texas area occured in Crosby, Texas on a rig owned by the Louisiana Oil and Gas Company.
