The Tupelo Tornado

5 April 1936 


On this date in 1936...

A twister with an estimated F-5 strength killed more than 230 people when it devastated Tupelo, Mississippi.

  • 1861 - Federals abandoned Ft Quitman, Texas
  • 1862 – The Battle of Yorktown, Virginia began.
  • 1933 – U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed two executive orders: 6101 to establish the Civilian Conservation Corps, and 6102 "forbidding the Hoarding of Gold Coin, Gold Bullion, and Gold Certificates" by U.S. citizens.
