Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

On this date in 1848... 

The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican War and extended United States' territory to the Pacific Ocean. Mexico relinquished claims to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California in exchange for $15 million.

  • 1863 - Samuel Langhorne Clemens used a pseudonym for the first time. He is better remembered by the pseudonym which is Mark Twain.
  • 1887 - A new law prohibited the use of Indian languages in all schools to hasten their Americanization.
  • 1888 - Frank Sprague opened the first successful U.S. electric street rail system, the Richmond Union Passenger Railway, in Richmond, Virginia.
  • 1892 - William Painter of Baltimore, Maryland patented the bottle cap.
  • 1932 - Al Capone was sent to prison in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • 1949 - Golfer Ben Hogan was seriously injured in an auto accident in Van Horn, Texas.
  • 2004 - It was reported that a white powder had been found in an office of Tennessee Senator and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. The CDC later confirmed that the powder was the poison ricin.
