The Alabama Strikes

11 January 1863 

On this date in 1863...

Captain Raphael Semmes in command of the C.S.S. Alabama accosted the federal blockading fleet off Galveston, Texas. One of the ships, the U.S.S. Hatteras,  was sent out to confront the Alabama too far from support of the fleet. In the ensuing naval engagement the Alabama quickly sank the Hatteras, further adding to Semmes legendary reputation.

Other Years:

• 1698 - One of French four missionaries who had been staying with the Quapaw, Father Pere Antoine Davion reached the Tunica tribe, on the Mississippi River.
• 1861 - Alabama seceded from the union. 
• 1861 - Louisiana state troops seized Forts Jackson, Fort St. Phillip, and the USMC Hospital near New Orleans.
• 1863 - Federal troops capture Ft. Hindman at Arkansas Post, Arkansas.
• 1924 - Blues musician Slim Harpo was born as  James Moore at Lobdell, Louisiana, 
• 1961 - Racially motivated rioting broke out at the University of Georgia.
• 2001 - The Texas Board of Criminal Justice released a review of the escape of the "Texas 7," stating that prison staff missed critical opportunities to prevent the escape.
