On this date in 1963 - U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. Governor John Connally was seriously wounded. Lee Harvey Oswald, was arrested for the shooting. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas became the 36th president of the United States.

- 1718 - British sailors killed and beheaded the notorious pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, in a sea battle off Okracoke Island, North Carolina.
- 1775 - Patriots defeated a Loyalist force at Reedy Creek, South Carolina.
- 1985 - Anne Henderson-Pollard was taken into custody a day after her husband Jonathon Jay Pollard of Texas was arrested for spying for Israel.
- 2012 - Two people were killed and 120 injured after more than a hundred vehicles had a pile-up in dense fog on a Texas freeway.
