The Andy Griffith Show started its 8-year run on CBS. One of the most beloved television programs of all time, the Andy Griffith Show is one of the few programs that has remained, through syndication, on the air somewhere in the world every day since it first began.

- 1862 - The Battle of Corinth, Mississippi began.
- 1922 - Rebecca L. Felton became the first female to hold office of U.S. Senator. She was appointed by Governor Thomas W. Hardwick of Georgia to fill a vacancy.
- 1962 - The Sigma VII blasted off from Cape Canaveral for a nine-hour flight.
- 1974 - Frank Robinson of Beaumont, Texas took over the Cleveland Indians as the first black manager in major league baseball.
- 1990 - Florida record store owner Charles Freeman was found guilty of obscenity for selling 2 Live Crew rap records.
