On this date in 1997...
The Air Force released a report on the so-called "Roswell U.F.O. Incident," suggesting the alien bodies witnesses reported seeing in 1947 were actually life-sized dummies. The report still does not explain why the dummies were passengers on a weather balloon.

- 1832 - The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the state of Georgia illegally tried to exercise control over the Cherokee contrary to federal law, and treaties. The court struck down the anti-Indian laws passed by Georgia seizing land and nullifying tribal laws. U.S. President Andrew Jackson was quoted saying, "John Marshall has rendered his decision; now let him enforce it," then proceeded to ignore the Supreme Court ruling.
- 1853 - U.S. President Franklin Pierce signed the Gadsden Purchase agreement of 29,670 square miles from Mexico in present-day southern Arizona and New Mexico for $10 million.
- 1863 - Confederate Generals James Longstreet and A.P. Hill moved their corps into Maryland and gained position to invade Pennsylvania.
- 1986 - Guy Hunt was elected as the first Republican governor of Alabama in 112 years.
