On this date in 1864...

Confederate cavalry commanded by General Nathan Bedford Forrest routed a superior federal force at the Battle of Brice's Crossroads, Mississippi, capturing 1,600 federal troops, 16 cannon, and a supply train.

  • 1610 - Thomas West, the third Baron de La Mar, was appointed governor of Virginia colony.
  • 1861 - Confederate troops under General John Bankhead Magruder repulsed the federal forces of Benjamin "Beast" Butler at Big Bethel, North Carolina.
  • 2004 - Georgia native, Ray Charles, the blind Grammy winning singer who blended gospel with the blues and became a music legend, died in Beverly Hills, California at the age of 73.
