The Darkest Day

19 April 1995

On this date in 1995...

A truck bomb exploded outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people, and injuring 500. Northern terrorist Timothy McVeigh was later convicted of the bombing and executed by lethal injection.

  • 1861 - U.S. President Lincoln announced the blockade of all Southern ports from South Carolina to Texas.
  • 1861 - Governor Thomas Holliday Hicks called Maryland's secession convention.
  • 1865 - The Battle of Culloden, Georgia.
  • 1993 - After a 51 day siege by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and the F.B.I., government agents used armored vehicles to assault the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas.  Seventy-Six Branch Davidians died when a fire broke out and consumed the building. The dead included the children living in the community whom the government’s concern for was said to have prompted the initial raid. Accident, suicide, tear gas are all disputed causes for the fatal fire.
