On this date in 1861...
The First National Flag of the Confederacy was raised above the statehouse in Montgomery, Alabama which served as the provisional Confederate capitol. The flag was raised by Miss Letitia Christian Tyler, granddaughter of former U.S. President John Tyler.

- 1861 - The Arkansas Secession Convention assembled in Little Rock
- 1883 - John Gordon Cashman first published the "Vicksburg Evening Post" in Mississippi.
- 1921 - An act of Congress established Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas.
- 2000 - Thousands of Southern protesters marched to the statehouse steps at Montgomery, Alabama. There they signed the Declaration of Southern Cultural Independence stating in part, “We, as citizens of the sovereign States of the South, proclaim before Almighty God and before all nations of the earth, that we are a separate and distinct people, with an honourable heritage and culture worthy of protection and preservation…”
