Faulkner Wins Nobel

William Faulkner accepted the Nobel Prize for Literature in Stockholm, Sweden.

  • 1817 - Mississippi became the 20th U.S. state.
  • 1836: Approximately 1600 Creeks walking the Trail of Tears arrived at Fort Gibson, in eastern Indian Territory. 
  • 1861 - The Confederate Congress admitted Kentucky to the Confederacy as the 13th state.
  • 1869 - The first American chapter of Kappa Sigma was founded at the University of Virginia.
  • 1948 - The U.N. General Assembly adopted its Universal Declaration on Human Rights.
  • 1949 - Fats Domino recorded several tracks for Imperial Records, including "The Fat Man," regarded by some as the first rock and roll record.
