William Faulkner accepted the Nobel Prize for Literature in Stockholm, Sweden.

- 1861 - The Confederate Congress admitted Kentucky to the Confederacy as the 13th state.

- 1948 - The U.N. General Assembly adopted its Universal Declaration on Human Rights.
- 1949 - Fats Domino recorded several tracks for Imperial Records, including "The Fat Man," regarded by some as the first rock and roll record.
